MEIC team reveals the key drivers of PM_2.5 air pollution deaths in China 2002–2017

Emission controls avoided some 870,000 deaths in China between 2002 and 2017 but further air quality improvements need energy–climate policies and changed economic structure, according to index decomposition analysis and chemical transport models.

Between January and April 2020, China’s CO2 emissions fell by 11.5% compared to the same period in 2019, but emissions have since rebounded to pre-pandemic levels owing to the fast economic recovery in industrial provinces.

Retrospect the decadal changes in anthropogenic source contribution to the PM_2.5-related health impacts in China based on MEIC emission inventory

In the past 25 years, the emission source contribution to PM2.5 related premature mortality has changed evidently. In 1990, the residential sector was the leading source, followed by industry, power, agriculture and transportation. Whereas in 2015, the industrial sector became the largest contributor, followed by residential, agriculture, transportation and power.
